Episode 249:

This week, we got to talk to David Eliuk about what it took to set the Guinness World Record for Most T-Shirts Worn During a Half-Marathon. David described how he decided on this goal, how he trained, the requirements for the record to be recognized, and the challenges he faced along the way. Running 13.1 miles while wearing 120 shirts is no mean feat, and it was fun to hear about David's background, goals, and challenges.

Most t-shirts worn whilst running a half-marathon - 120 by David Eliuk (Canada)

Many people ask me why this record? There are 2 answers for me. 1. When I first started this journey in the fall of 2021 there was so much negativity and despair in the world. I saw the record holder at the time and he made me smile. I wanted to ‘lighten the mood’ if only during a passing glance where someone saw me running and made them smile, I wanted to do my part to make things better. 2. Who wouldn’t want to be the best in the world at something? There are almost 8 billion people on the planet right now, and no one has ever done this. That is something pretty neat to me.

Revel City Canyon Marathon

This was a very special race for me. I had spent 2 full seasons attempting to train and qualify for the Boston Marathon. This was my 5th attempt at trying to obtain a qualifying time. What made it really special was having my family at the finish line to celebrate with. My time also allowed me to really celebrate and enjoy the moment knowing that I had qualified by more than 10 minutes under my time needed.

This course was primarily downhill, which many runners feel is easy. Trust me, running downhill for that long has a huge impact on your body. I spent time working with a coach to learn proper ways to run downhill on varying gradients. The first 21km of this race had an average gradient of 7%.
